New Year – New Trends
Okay, okay, we all know that the minute hand moving from 11:59 to 12:00 on December 31st doesn't automatically mean out with the old and in with the new (for example, those 5lbs I accumulated in the past month are STILL on my thighs), but there are definitely some up and coming design trends that we'll be seeing more of in 2016.
We try not to let Pantone's Color of the Year dictate too much of our style (design comes naturally!) but this year's colors remind us a little of something, or should I say, some decade...
The 80s! But not the bad, Pretty in Pink kind of 80s. More so the cool, Miami Vice 80s – but without the white blazers. They say that what goes around comes around, and that's certainly been true for Midcentury Modern, so why not 80s? Just make sure to contrast your pastels with richer colors and textures.
Another big trend coming up is the fun use of lighting, especially neon signs as art and backlighting mirrors and shelves. The office we designed above incorporated both of these trends.
Silver will always be our go to metal, whether stainless or brushed, but we're seeing more accessories and lighting in rose gold this year. Bonus: rose gold will look great with the colors of the year!
No one likes a two seater sofa – two fit fine, but try to squeeze one more and someone's falling in the crack. It's ultimately wasted space. Our new go-to is the one-seat sofa – it looks sleek and minimal and can act as an extra bed for overnight guests.
After turning against it in the late 90s, greenery is now making a big comeback. We're seeing a lot of fun ways to hang plants, whether they be potted succulents or creeping vines – another 80s throwback!
Finally, the new trend we're loving is open shelving in the kitchen. Sure it takes a little more dusting - but that was one of your News Years Resolutions, right?
